How to Play Soccer - Joe Hulme

NOTHING can stop the footballers of other days - those who have grown too long in the tooth - from having their moments of real enjoyment out of the game. They fix their carpet slippers: fill up the old pipe, and as the smoke curls upwards they dream of a wonderful time - somewhere in the past: when football was football, and that sort of thing. From time to time I have enjoyed myself on those lines, thinking aloud, with other former footballers around me, about how much better the game used to be than it is now.

I have finished with that idle chatter about old times, however. When I find myself among a party living in the glories of the past, I now include myself out - pretty quickly. In general I think football is as good as ever it was. In many respects it is considerably better.

That isn't to say that it can't be improved still further. One thing which delays the further improvement is the fact - and it is a fact - that in the first-class game to-day there are too many round pegs in square holes: too many fellows playing in positions other than those to which their play, their ability, is best suited.

Baseball For BOYS - John M. Rosenburg

The young player of today is smartly uniformed and fully equipped. He plays on a miniature Big League diamond ruled by uniformed umpires. He often plays before large crowds and occasionally gets his name in a newspaper. The professional recreation people say all this represents a commendable contrast to the pre-war kid baseballer who did most of his playing in a vacant lot, or cow pasture, with a ball that was more friction tape than ball. They add, however, that the diamond programs have mushroomed so rapidly that baseball "education" - the teaching of individual and team play-has, unwittingly to be sure, dragged behind.

Since there has been a dearth of written material about the subject, it has been the objective of the writer to produce a manual that will provide player, manager, fan and father-coach with the kind of useful, practical informa-tion that can be applied to amateur baseball, especially to those programs for 8 to 18 year-olds.

Most of the book is devoted to individual and team play with these two major groupings broken down and presented in logical fashion and also in the order of importance. For example, the three major skills-batting, running and throw-ing-are given first. The specialized skills, such as pitching and catching, follow. Team play, of course, is divided in two parts-offense and defense.

BOXING Simplified - John J. Walsh

TThe following chapters deal with organized and supervised boxing as conducted today in colleges, high schools, and recreational centers. They are in no way concerned with professional fighting, with which amateur boxing should at no time be confused. Professional fighting is a business conducted for monetary gain. Amateur boxing is a competitive sport or recreation. These distinctions should be kept in mind at all times.

We are directing our instructions, advice, and suggestions to the coach supervising boxers individually or in groups; to the boy who, motivated by a desire for competitive or recreational activity, wishes to learn the fundamentals of boxing; and also to the father who acquiesces to the urge to teach his son the art of boxing.

We intend to be very fundamental in our approach, and thus to enable even an inexperienced coach to put across readily an effective instructional program to his boys. We want to make it possible for the boy to whom personal supervision is unavailable to teach himself. We also hope to save the father lacking in boxing experience the ignominy of receiving a "shiner" as he attempts on bended knees to impart to his son the principles of the "manly art."

We believe that too often the fundamentals of boxing are overlooked in favor of complicated punches, series of maneuvers, and fancy footwork. Just as fundamentals such as tackling and blocking pay off in football, so it is the properly executed left jab, straight right, and an occasional left hook that bring victory in the boxing ring.

WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED: An Instructional Guide - Raymond E. Sparks

This guide presents the fundamentals of effective wrestling
in a progression specifically designed for efficient learning. From the numberless holds, counters, and blocks that constitute skillful Wrestling, this book explains and illustrates in detail 65 maneuvers, arranging them in 38 sequences and drills.

The sequences teach the basic wrestling techniques through step-by-step instructions, with each step given in full detail and keyed to an accompanying illustration. In learning the various moves and holds, the wrestler uses them in combinations that progressively develop his skills in a sure and logical manner.

The basic positions and movements are practiced in the warm-up and conditioning activities, and are then followed by the sequences. The holds and maneuvers are also listed in summary according to the usual categories of take-downs, rides, pins, and reversals. An outline for 30 lessons suggests a scheme for individual or class instruction.

Kite Making and Flying - Harold Ridgway

IN the first section of the book (Chapters 1-8) instructions and diagrams are given for making 19 different kites. It will be found that some are easy to make; others require more time and skill. Again, there are several sizes which range, for example, from the 'Small Fish' kite to the large Box kite. This selection is offered for certain reasons. One is to help the beginner to progress from the simpler to the more complex forms. In this way he will gain skill in making and handling many different kites, and at the same time he may build up a collection of which he can be justly proud.

Another and related reason is that many people do not know how large the scope is in kite design. These chapters will reveal something of that scope, and so may serve to correct the idea that kites are limited to the Box and Pegtop styles. Literally speaking, dozens of different styles could be made, and they would fly, if certain rules were kept. From the large number available, a selection has been made in which the reader may find much that is of interest and satisfaction to him.

The rest of the book (Chapters 9-13) is concerned with a number of important things, each of which forms a part of kite-craft. They may serve to prove that this hobby opens a door to a variety of interesting activities and studies. The writer's intention has been to present in as simple a way as is possible the obvious and less obvious factors in kite making and flying. It is earnestly hoped that the book may succeed in attracting many new friends to a hobby which can be of absorbing interest to all who take it up.

SURF-RIDING: It's Thrills and Techniques - O.B. Patterson

To know fully the thrills of life one must live! Life, being identical with activity, both mental and physical, brings us to the realization that the full-ness of living can only be experienced through coordination and harmony of body, mind and spirit. Such fullness of living, the surf-rider feels and knows. He gazes out over the open sea in search of mountainous waves and, on sighting one, tosses his board onto the surface of the water. Step-ping onto the board with effortless sureness he soon drops full length upon its deck and with a few deep strokes into the tropical water he glides away from the shore out into the breakers that come crashing over the coral reefs.

When you see him finally speeding along the surface of the wave cutting across the swollen crest like the blade of a knife, racing ahead to keep his board from being swallowed up by the ever-pursuing breaker which speeds towards the shore, you will realize that you have witnessed a superb exhibition of grace, rhythm, and co-ordination. All phases of pleasant living call for this harmonious adjustment, for without it we miss much of the beauty and happiness that comes from knowing and doing the things worthwhile.

Manual of Ski Mountaineering

THE WIND HAD A MEAN EDGE on it as it curved to cross the crest of the Sierra Nevada and found us there, two thousand feet above the site of the Donner Party tragedy, trying to find out how to camp in deep snow. It was deep snow that caught the Donners' immigrants back in 1846. Thirty-six people died from cold and starvation, and more would have starved, probably, but for cannibalism.

Our exposed spot on the crest was not where you would expect to find a father pushing fifty, much less being pushed by his two teenage sons. But there we were anyway, and by plan. We knew that California has come (or gone) quite a distance since the Donner Party's ordeal. Skiing technique has progressed quite a bit too since Snowshoe Thompson carried the trans-Sierra mails in the late 'fifties (the eighteen-fifties, that is) on his eleven-foot skis and since his contemporaries set 85-mile-per-hour speed records in the earliest American ski races on record.

More relevantly, we also knew that California has gone a fair distance in making a sport of the best of what the Donners and Thompson learned-how to survive in snow and how to ski safely through rugged, untracked terrain. The ice-edged wind found us looking at the very peaks upon which that new sport, ski mountaineering, had been adapted to California terrain by the Sierra Club and then exported to help the armed forces in World War II...

Ski-running - Katharine Symonds Furse

The first introduction of Skis into Switzerland, which I have been able to trace, was by the monks of St. Bernard, who obtained some pairs from Norway in 1883, thinking that they might be useful in their work of mercy, rescuing pedestrians who were in difficulties on the Pass. About 1887 Colonel Napier came to Davos bringing with him a Norwegian man-servant and a pair of Skis. Mythical tales were told of the way this man slid down the slopes from chalet to hotel, carrying a tea tray on his shoulder.

Outdoor Sports and Games - Claude H. Miller

Suppose you should wake up Christmas morning and find yourself to be the owner of a bicycle. It is a brand-new wheel and everything is in perfect working order. The bearings are well oiled, the nickel is bright and shiny and it is all tuned up and ready for use. If you are a careful, sensible boy you can have fun with it for a long time until finally, like the ? One Hoss Shay? in the poem, it wears out and goes to pieces all at once. On the other hand, if you are careless or indifferent or lazy you may allow the machine to get out of order or to become rusty from disuse, or perhaps when a nut works loose you neglect it and have a breakdown on the road, or you may forget to oil the bearings and in a short time they begin to squeak and wear.

Lawn Tennis for Ladies - Mrs. Lambert Chambers

A good lawn tennis racket is indispensable; indeed, to use a weapon of inferior make is to court failure from the start. You cannot be too particular to have a really well-made racket. Fortunately there are now so many good makers that it is a player's own fault if she is not suitably equipped. It may be a little more expensive to buy a really first-class racket; but the few extra shillings are well worth while if you mean to take up the game seriously, and to get out of it all the enjoyment you can.

The Art of Lawn Tennis - William T. Tilden

Always dress in tennis clothes when engaging in tennis. White is the established colour. Soft shirt, white flannel trousers, heavy white socks, and rubber-soled shoes form the accepted dress for tennis. Do not appear on the courts in dark clothes, as they are apt to be heavy and hinder your speed of movement, and also they are a violation of the unwritten ethics of the game.

Squash Tennis - Richard C. Squires

Squash Tennis is one of the few racquet and ball indoor sports that can be termed honestly and strictly ?American? in origin, whereas Squash Racquets has its roots in England going as far back as the 1850s. The game spread to America in the 1880s and the first real organized Squash Racquets play was in 1882 at St. Paul's Prep School, in Concord, New Hampshire.
