Many years ago Mr. Alfred de Rothschild tried, through his agents in China, to
secure a specimen of the Palace dog for the writer, in order to carry on the
Goodwood strain, but without success, even after a correspondence with Pekin
which lasted more than two years; but we succeeded in obtaining confirmation of
what we had always understood: namely, that the Palace dogs are rigidly guarded,
and that their theft is punishable by death. At the time of the Boxer Rebellion
only Spaniels, Pugs, and Poodles were found in the Imperial Palace when it was
occupied by the Allied Forces, the little dogs having once more preceded the
court in the flight to Si-gnanfu
My Doggie and I
-
R.M. Ballantyne
I possess a doggie — not a dog, observe, but a doggie. If he had been a dog I
would not have presumed to intrude him on your notice. A dog is all very well in
his way — one of the noblest of animals, I admit, and pre-eminently fitted to be
the companion of man, for he has an affectionate nature, which man demands, and
a forgiving disposition, which man needs — but a dog, with all his noble
qualities, is not to be compared to a doggie.
The Dog -
William Youatt
I dashed a basin of cold water in his face, and he dropped as if he had been
shot. He lay motionless nearly a minute, and then began to struggle and to bark;
another cup of water was dashed in his face, and he lay quite motionless during
two minutes or more. In the mean time I had got a grain each of calomel and
tartar emetic, which I put on his tongue, and washed it down with a little
water. He began to recover, and again began to yelp, although much softer; but,
in about a quarter of an hour, sickness commenced, and he ceased his noise.
Companion Dog Training; A
Pictorial Guide - Hans
Tossutti
Systematic Obedience Training in
Word and Picture
The steadily increasing interest in the obedience trained dog has
made it necessary for the amateur to seek assist-ance in order to
learn the best approved methods of train-ing his dog in this type of
work. Such knowledge is necessary not alone for the purpose of
training the dog for obedient deportment in the home, but also for
the pur-pose of enabling the average owner to compete with his dog
in organized obedience test competitions.
Almost from the moment that the American Kennel Club recognized all
such training to the extent of adopt-ing rules and regulations for
it, many books, written primarily to instruct along the general
lines of feeding, care and management, included information on
training in more or less understandable form. And while,
specifically, the training lessons contained in these books differed
a great deal, in the aggregate they were com-mendable in bringing to
the public attention the fact that training by amateurs, under the
right auspices, was not only possible but highly desirable.

The
Complete Book of Cats
This is the new classic for cat lovers - a study by
two devoted admirers.
Walter Chandoha, whose pictures of cats are famous the
world over, has contributed 150 of his finest
photographs-pictures that show his remarkable insight
into the mind and changing moods of the cat. And Adie
Suehsdorf has written a sparkling tribute to this
independent, absorbing and-for many people-indispensable
friend.
But it's also a practical book. There's helpful advice
on choosing a kitten, on care and feeding, on sleeping
and discipline, on what to do when your cat is sick and
when to call the vet.
The authors guide you through the cat's day and week,
through her whole life cycle, with a combination of
bright text and the greatest collection of cat pictures
ever published.
