The Royal Game of the Ombre
By this you see first that the Spadillio, or Ace of Spades is always the first
Card, and alwayes Trump, be the Trump what suit soever; and the Basto, or Ace of
Clubs alwayes the third. Secondly, the of Black, there are but eleven Trumps,
and of Red twelve. Thirdly, that the Red Ace enters into the fourth place when
it is Trump, and then is called the Punto, otherwise 'tis only rank'd after the
Knave, and is only call'd the Ace. Fourthly, that (excepting the Deuces of
Black, and Sevens of Red, which are call'd the Mallilio's, and are alwayes the
second Cards when they are Trumps) the least small Cards of the Red are alwayes
best, and the greatest of the Black.
Chess and Checkers: The Way to
Mastership -

Now the Pawn e5 is sufficiently protected and Black threatens to exert pressure
on d4 by playing B-g4 and Kt-c6. It might seem that White can ignore this threat
and as soon as d4 attacked either exchange the Pawn on e5 or advance him to d5.
However, the former maneuver would open the d-file for Black's Rooks and the
latter would not be very good either before Black has castled; for the advance
of the d-pawn closes the center-files permanently for the Rooks so that Black's
King is safe in the center while White may have to face an attack on the King's
wing which Black might initiate by storming with the h and g Pawns.

Chess History and
Reminiscences
-
H. E. Bird
Of all the claims which have been advanced to the invention and origin of chess,
that of the Hindu Game the Chaturanga is the most ancient, and its accounts
contain the earliest allusion worthy of serious notice to anything partaking of
the principles and form of chess. The description of it is taken from the
Sanskrit text, and our first knowledge of it is obtained through the works of
Dr. Hyde, 1693, and Sir William Jones, 1784, Professor Duncan Forbes in a
History of Chess, dedicated to Sir Frederic Madden and Howard Staunton,
published in 1860, further elaborated the researches of his predecessors and
claims by the aid of his better acquaintance with chess, and improved knowledge
of the Sanskrit to have proved the Chaturanga as the first form of chess beyond
a shadow of doubt.
How To Play Winning Poker
- Albert H. Morehead, Editor, The Official Rules of
Card Games
Poker is called the American
national game. (It shares this distinction with baseball.)
Actually, poker comes as close to being international as any card
game possibly could. It probably originated in Persia; it developed
in Europe; it did attain its present form in the United
States-probably in the 1830s-but today it is played in every country
in which playing cards are known. Nevertheless, since poker reached
those countries from the United States and since it is
internationally known as our national game, every American as a
point of patriotic pride should know how to play an acceptable game
of poker.
No one knows surely where poker originated, when it originated, or
how it got its name. The basic principle of poker is that the most
unusual combination of cards is the winning hand. This is such an
obvious basis for a game that there may have been ancestors of poker
stretching back to the year 894 A.D., when playing cards were
invented.
