The
Ballet Physique
-
Celia Sparger
In the young world of
British ballet Celia Sparger is a special kind of pioneer. The
unmapped territory of her exploration lies between the strictly
medical study of physique and the purely artistic judgment of a
ballet dancer's quality. It is, of course, a territory where many of
the people who are concerned with ballet stray more or less
haphazardly.
Teachers, obviously, are interested both in their pupils' physical
capabilities and in the artistic instrument which they hope these
pupils will become. And when the critic or the public judges a
ballet dancer's aesthetic merits or demerits that judgment makes
much play with expressions about arms, feet, hands, legs and
carriage. Celia Sparger's difference is that she is, at once, highly
trained to observe the causes of physical strength, weakness, grace
and awkwardness, has had an exceptionally long and cogent experience
in applying that training to the fledgling talent of the Royal
Ballet School and, in the final issue, is less interested in
physique than in artistry.
To find something of this blended outlook in one person is not rare
at all. But what is most rare is to find it in so intense a form-so
intense, indeed, that it amounts to an almost unique qualification
for the task of helping to discover what child is likely to become a
fine dancer and what are the particular physical difficulties which
need to be overcome if the promising pupil is not to fall by the
wayside.

TUMBLER'S
Manual -
William LaPorte and Al Renner
Tumbling has always been a valuable and popular activity in school
programs and has the particular advantage of requiring very little
equipment. Its advancement has been retarded, however, because of
the lack of uniform standards and consistent teaching procedures. It
is also considered by many a hazardous activity, but this belief can
usually be traced to the results of inefficient teaching and
improper sequence of progression. The progression presented in this
manual should do much to eliminate the common hazards of tumbling.
It was the purpose of the authors to
set forth the material in suitable form for class instruction on the
high school and college levels. In physical education classes the
average of motor ability is much lower than that found in advanced
groups and gymnastic teams. Consequently the method of teaching and
the rapidity of progression must be adapted carefully. Stunts must
be simpler and safer. Hence the typical gymnastic team coaching
procedure and progression cannot be used successfully for physical
education classes.
The authors believe that by following
closely the procedures and progressions herein outlined any
well-trained instructor will be able to handle classes in tumbling
without serious accidents and with a high degree of teaching
success.

Keeping Fit All the Way
-
Walter Camp
When I started the experiment of the Senior Service Corps at New Haven, in the
spring of 1917, all my men were over forty-five, and several of them had passed
the seventy mark; yet all found increased health and efficiency from the
prescribed regime. There was a distinct gain, not only in health, but in spirits
and in temper. Nerves that had been at high tension relaxed to normal. Effort
that had seemed exhaustive became pleasurable. The ordinary problems of business
or finance, once so apt to be vexatious, lost their power to produce worry. In
fact, these men had renewed their youth; they had altered the horizon-line of
advancing age, across which only clouds of doubt and apprehension could be seen,
to that of youth, radiant with the sunshine of hope and the promise of
accomplishment.
Wear and Tear - Silas Weir Mitchell
Each organ is to every other as an excreting organ. In other words, to insure
perfect health, every tissue, bone, nerve, tendon, or muscle should take from
the blood certain materials and return to it certain others. To do this every
organ must or ought to have its period of activity and of rest, so as to keep
the vital fluid in a proper state to nourish every other part. This process in
perfect health is a system of mutual assurance, and is probably essential to a
condition of entire vigor of both mind and body. (tell that to Charlotte
Gilman!)
The Infant System
-
Samuel Wilderspin
Arguments to show the importance of
exercise, might be drawn from every part of the animal economy. Without it, the
circulation of the blood cannot be properly carried on, nor the different
secretions duly performed; neither can the fluids be properly prepared, nor the
solids rendered firm or strong. The action of the heart, the motion of the
lungs, and all the vital functions, are greatly assisted by exercise. But to
point out the manner in which these effects are produced, would lead us beyond
the present subject.
An Iron Will - Orison Swett Marden
To prosper you must improve your brain power; and nothing helps the brain
more than a healthy body. The race of to-day is only to be won by those who
will study to keep their bodies in such good condition that their minds are able
and ready to sustain that high pressure on memory and mind, which our present
fierce competition engenders. It is health rather than strength that is now
wanted. Health is essentially the requirement of our time to enable us to
succeed in life. In all modern occupations—from the nursery to the school, from
the school to the shop or world beyond—the brain and nerve strain go on,
continuous, augmenting, and intensifying.
