The
Psychology of Beauty - Ethel D. Puffer
The Psychology of Beauty is a discussion of beauty in its various forms.
Most concepts still apply today though the original book was written in 1905.
The author explains the various components and factors that comprise beauty.
She
also criticizes popular opinion on beauty.
Book Excerpt:
The human being who thrills to the experience of beauty in nature and in art
does not forever rest with that experience unquestioned. The day comes when he
yearns to pierce the secret of his emotion, to discover what it is, and why,
that has so stung him--to defend and to justify his transport to himself and to
others. He seeks a reason for the faith that is in him.
And so have arisen the speculative theories of the nature of beauty, on the one

The loss of personality! In that dread thought there lies, to most of us, all
the sting of death and the victory of the grave. It seems, with such a fate in
store, that immortality were futile, and life itself a mockery. Yet the idea,
when dwelt upon, assumes an aspect of strange familiarity; it is an old friend,
after all. Can we deny that all our sweetest hours are those of
self-forgetfulness?
Massage and the Swedish
Movements
Manual treatment for disease has to a
certain extent existed since the creation. Man had, by-instinct,
acquired the art of manipulation long before nature yielded her
secrets in medicine. This is still the practice among many nations.
In Sweden, even at the present time, certain manipulations are used
among the peasants for cramps, swellings, etc. The Swedes seem never
to have lost the art - but recently revived in other, countries.
Amiot and Dally speak of a perfect system of gymnastics among the
Chinese three thousand years before the Christian era. They
maintained that gymnastics, by preventing stagnation, produced an
even and harmonious movement of the fluids in the human body, which
is necessary to health. Not only did they use gymnastics to
pre-serve health, but they also had a thorough knowledge of their
therapeutic effects. From each of the natural positions they placed
the body and limbs in certain derivative positions, which modified
the movement of the fluids and were, of course, important in
different diseases.
Work comes complete with source
