1. Be Healthy With Yoga
- Sonya Richmond
YOGA at last is coming into its own in
the Western world. After many years of being dismissed as a bizarre
cult attractive only to eccentrics, it is today recognized as a
fundamental art and skill. More than that, many of its most bitter
opponents, people who were among the first to cry down Yogic
culture, have now embraced it as a way of life.
The ancients who formulated the science of Yoga were way ahead of us
in our modern world of stress and hurry. Recognizing, thousands of
years ago, man's basic need for discipline to counteract the
physical and spiritual deterioration caused by the mere fight for
survival, they evolved a science which is at once as ancient as
India herself and as modern as the space age.
The law of Yoga is the law of Life. Yoga embodies the secrets of
successful living and combines profound and age-old truths with a
way of life acceptable to the modern mind. It was evolved from the
Veda, one of the most ancient scriptural books known to mankind in
which Indian saints and sages taught that the Universe is one and
that all religions are paths ascending the same mountain towards
Eternal Truth. The great modern saint, Sri Ramakrishna, is often
quoted as saying, 'As many faiths, so many paths.'

2. Yoga Made Easy
- Desmond Dunne
Yoga is an ancient health-art developed
and perfected over the centuries by the Sages and Wise Men of
ancient India. Yoga is not a religion, a metaphysical doctrine, or a
philosophy. It is not magic or mysticism, although the amazing
improvements it can make in your health, your appearance and your
youthfulness may often seem magical, even miraculous. For thousands
of years the Yogis of India have used the simple, reasonable
principles of Yoga to regain the zest and enthusiasm and good health
of their youth, to preserve into middle age the clear-thinking and
sound physique of manhood, and to continue enjoying even in old age
the resilience, healthfulness, and well-being of their younger
years.
Yoga can take years off your face and years from your body-and add
years to your life. There are certain secret methods by which the
Yogis keep the flexibility and "spring" of early youth in their
joints and muscles and limbs well into the declining years. It is a
common sight to see, in the crowded, colorful streets of Bombay or
New Delhi, Yogis well into their seventies and even their eighties,
with the straight, graceful posture of a boy, walking with the
elastic, springy step of youth... with firm, healthy bodies, their
hair dark and glossy and un-streaked with grey. Firm, unlined faces
.. . clear, un-dimmed eyes.
Not only does Yoga make you look and feel years younger, years
healthier, but it lends your body superb healthiness. This system of
Yoga does not demand difficult positions and postures, uncomfortable
exercises or strenuous diets. This is where it differs from every
other book on Yoga previously published. It describes the simple,
easy, "common-sense" secrets of using the natural health God gave
you. It works like magic because it enables the body to realize its
full potential of good health.

3. Yoga Lessons for Developing
Spiritual Consciousness
Yoga is a subject which has enthralled
the attention of the world from time out of mind. No one has
hitherto done justice to such a grand system though there have been,
now and then, innumerable attempts.
The present author, my esteemed friend, Swami Mukerji, a Yogi who
comes out of a successive generation of Yogis, is a fit and proper
instrument to handle the subject. He, in these lessons prepares the
layman for an understanding of the Yoga and, through a series of
wise and masterful sayings, impresses on the mind of the reader the
necessity for rising above materialism, nay, solves the very problem
"What am I?"
Every line is pregnant with mature thoughts and rivets one's
attention, and makes him think, think, think. This is not a work for
which an introduction, briefly setting forth the contents, could be
written. I can but ask you to read, digest and improve. DE. T. R.

WRESTLING
ILLUSTRATED: An Instructional Guide
- Raymond E. Sparks
This guide presents the fundamentals of effective wrestling in a
progression specifically designed for efficient learning. From the
numberless holds, counters, and blocks that constitute skillful
Wrestling, this book explains and illustrates in detail 65
maneuvers, arranging them in 38 sequences and drills.
The sequences teach the basic wrestling techniques through
step-by-step instructions, with each step given in full detail and
keyed to an accompanying illustration. In learning the various moves
and holds, the wrestler uses them in combinations that progressively
develop his skills in a sure and logical manner.
The basic positions and movements are practiced in the warm-up and
conditioning activities, and are then followed by the sequences. The
holds and maneuvers are also listed in summary according to the
usual categories of take-downs, rides, pins, and reversals. An
outline for 30 lessons suggests a scheme for individual or class
instruction.

6. BOXING
Simplified - John J. Walsh
TThe following chapters deal with organized and supervised boxing as conducted
today in colleges, high schools, and recreational centers. They are in no way
concerned with professional fighting, with which amateur boxing should at no
time be confused. Professional fighting is a business conducted for monetary
gain. Amateur boxing is a competitive sport or recreation. These distinctions
should be kept in mind at all times.
We are directing our instructions, advice, and suggestions to the coach
supervising boxers individually or in groups; to the boy who, motivated by a
desire for competitive or recreational activity, wishes to learn the
fundamentals of boxing; and also to the father who acquiesces to the urge to
teach his son the art of boxing.
We intend to be very fundamental in our approach, and thus to enable even an
inexperienced coach to put across readily an effective instructional program to
his boys. We want to make it possible for the boy to whom personal supervision
is unavailable to teach himself. We also hope to save the father lacking in
boxing experience the ignominy of receiving a "shiner" as he attempts on bended
knees to impart to his son the principles of the "manly art."
We believe that too often the fundamentals of boxing are overlooked in favor of
complicated punches, series of maneuvers, and fancy footwork. Just as
fundamentals such as tackling and blocking pay off in football, so it is the
properly executed left jab, straight right, and an occasional left hook that
bring victory in the boxing ring.

TUMBLER'S
Manual -
William LaPorte and Al Renner
Tumbling has always been a valuable and popular activity in school
programs and has the particular advantage of requiring very little
equipment. Its advancement has been retarded, however, because of
the lack of uniform standards and consistent teaching procedures. It
is also considered by many a hazardous activity, but this belief can
usually be traced to the results of inefficient teaching and
improper sequence of progression. The progression presented in this
manual should do much to eliminate the common hazards of tumbling.
It was the purpose of the authors to
set forth the material in suitable form for class instruction on the
high school and college levels. In physical education classes the
average of motor ability is much lower than that found in advanced
groups and gymnastic teams. Consequently the method of teaching and
the rapidity of progression must be adapted carefully. Stunts must
be simpler and safer. Hence the typical gymnastic team coaching
procedure and progression cannot be used successfully for physical
education classes.
The authors believe that by following
closely the procedures and progressions herein outlined any
well-trained instructor will be able to handle classes in tumbling
without serious accidents and with a high degree of teaching
success.

The
Ballet Physique -
Celia Sparger
In the young world of
British ballet Celia Sparger is a special kind of pioneer. The
unmapped territory of her exploration lies between the strictly
medical study of physique and the purely artistic judgment of a
ballet dancer's quality. It is, of course, a territory where many of
the people who are concerned with ballet stray more or less
haphazardly.
Teachers, obviously, are interested both in their pupils' physical
capabilities and in the artistic instrument which they hope these
pupils will become. And when the critic or the public judges a
ballet dancer's aesthetic merits or demerits that judgment makes
much play with expressions about arms, feet, hands, legs and
carriage. Celia Sparger's difference is that she is, at once, highly
trained to observe the causes of physical strength, weakness, grace
and awkwardness, has had an exceptionally long and cogent experience
in applying that training to the fledgling talent of the Royal
Ballet School and, in the final issue, is less interested in
physique than in artistry.
To find something of this blended outlook in one person is not rare
at all. But what is most rare is to find it in so intense a form-so
intense, indeed, that it amounts to an almost unique qualification
for the task of helping to discover what child is likely to become a
fine dancer and what are the particular physical difficulties which
need to be overcome if the promising pupil is not to fall by the
wayside.

Message and the Swedish
Movements
Manual treatment for disease has to a
certain extent existed since the creation. Man had, by-instinct,
acquired the art of manipulation long before nature yielded her
secrets in medicine. This is still the practice among many nations.
In Sweden, even at the present time, certain manipulations are used
among the peasants for cramps, swellings, etc. The Swedes seem never
to have lost the art - but recently revived in other, countries.
Amiot and Dally speak of a perfect system of gymnastics among the
Chinese three thousand years before the Christian era. They
maintained that gymnastics, by preventing stagnation, produced an
even and harmonious movement of the fluids in the human body, which
is necessary to health. Not only did they use gymnastics to
pre-serve health, but they also had a thorough knowledge of their
therapeutic effects. From each of the natural positions they placed
the body and limbs in certain derivative positions, which modified
the movement of the fluids and were, of course, important in
different diseases.
