Companion Dog Training; A
Pictorial Guide
- Hans
Tossutti
Systematic Obedience Training in
Word and Picture
The steadily increasing interest in the obedience trained dog has
made it necessary for the amateur to seek assist-ance in order to
learn the best approved methods of train-ing his dog in this type of
work. Such knowledge is necessary not alone for the purpose of
training the dog for obedient deportment in the home, but also for
the pur-pose of enabling the average owner to compete with his dog
in organized obedience test competitions.
Almost from the moment that the American Kennel Club recognized all
such training to the extent of adopt-ing rules and regulations for
it, many books, written primarily to instruct along the general
lines of feeding, care and management, included information on
training in more or less understandable form. And while,
specifically, the training lessons contained in these books differed
a great deal, in the aggregate they were com-mendable in bringing to
the public attention the fact that training by amateurs, under the
right auspices, was not only possible but highly desirable.

4. How To Study Birds
Not only does interest in birds cover
all classes of society and shades of opinion, but different people
watch birds in different ways, and to different degrees of
intensity. Thus bird-watchers may range from the person who can name
but half a dozen of the common species of birds, and yet can
appreciate their high aesthetic appeal, to the trained biologist,
whose critical interest is that of the research worker seeking to
gain, from the way birds live, some idea of their place in the
natural order. Between these two extremes there has been fixed in
the past a wide gulf, and a measure of contempt often exists in the
scientist for the so-called "bird-lover" who has the anthropomorphic
outlook, whilst the bird-lover in his turn regards the scientist as
a dust-dry man whose very training and attitude prevent him from
appreciating any of the aesthetic appeal that birds may have.
Actually, there can be few field-ornithologists, however rigid their
scientific attitude, who have not at sometime or other fallen
completely under the spell of birds as gloriously free creatures,
beautiful of form and often of voice, and this spell can be
intensified rather than weakened by a correct and scientific
attitude to bird behaviour. By studying the habits of birds and
interpreting their actions dispassionately on broad scientific
principles, we can arrive at a better understanding of their minds
and emotions, and their place in the green world in which they live.
Then, truly to know them is to love them.

5. First
Aid Hints for the Horseowner:
A Veterinary Notebook
HORSES confined in stables are being kept under artificial
conditions, and in consequence skill is required to maintain them in
good health. Living under natural conditions the horse eats grass ;
he eats for a very considerable number of hours each day and during
the night ; he feeds in small quantities at frequent intervals, and
he drinks whenever he feels inclined. He has a very small stomach
for his size. These facts should be borne in mind when horses are in
the stable, and the less the natural conditions are disturbed the
better.
Conditioning. Horses intended for hunting during the season should
be brought in from grass during July or, at the latest, August.
During July the grass begins to lack the nutritive qualities which
it had in May and June, and the horse will come up in less soft
condition if he has been given a feed of 5 lb. oats daily the last
few weeks at grass. This extra condition is due partly to the hard
food and partly to the fact that the oats give the horse more energy
and that he therefore takes more exercise on his own...

How To Play Winning Poker
-
Albert H. Morehead, Editor, The
Official Rules of
Card Games
Poker is called the American
national game. (It shares this distinction with baseball.)
Actually, poker comes as close to being international as any card
game possibly could. It probably originated in Persia; it developed
in Europe; it did attain its present form in the United
States-probably in the 1830s-but today it is played in every country
in which playing cards are known. Nevertheless, since poker reached
those countries from the United States and since it is
internationally known as our national game, every American as a
point of patriotic pride should know how to play an acceptable game
of poker.
No one knows surely where poker originated, when it originated, or
how it got its name. The basic principle of poker is that the most
unusual combination of cards is the winning hand. This is such an
obvious basis for a game that there may have been ancestors of poker
stretching back to the year 894 A.D., when playing cards were
invented.

The
Illustrated Key To the Tarot
The little treatise which follows is divided into three parts, in
the first of which I have dealt with the antiquities of the subject
and a few things that arise from and connect therewith. It should be
understood that it is not put forward as a contribution to
the-history of playing cards, about which I know and care nothing;
it is a consideration dedicated and addressed to a certain school of
occultism, more especially in France, as to the source and center of
all the phantasmagoria which has entered into expression during the
last fifty years under the pretense of considering Tarot cards
historically.
In the second part, I have dealt with the symbolism according to
some of its higher aspects, and this also serves to introduce the
complete and rectified Tarot," which is available separately, in the
form of colored cards, the designs of which are added to the present
text in black and white. They have been prepared under my
supervision - in respect of the attributions and meanings - by a
lady who has high claims as an artist.
Regarding the divinatory part, by which my thesis is terminated, I
consider it personally as a fact in the history of the Tarot; as
such, I have drawn, from all published sources, a harmony of the
meanings which have been attached to the various cards, and I have
given prominence to one method of working that has not been
published previously; having the merit of simplicity, while it is
also of universal application, it may be held to replace the
cumbrous and involved system? of the larger hand-books.

Ventriloquism
- Charles H. Olin
UNLIKE the poet the ventriloquist is not born, but is evolved by
persistent practice. This is contrary to the notion held by many
persons even in these enlightened days, who believe that the
ventriloquist comes into the world with a vocal apparatus differing
from that possessed by humanity in general-in fact, with a " double
throat" by which he is enabled to project his voice into space and
have it explode anywhere at will, much as a dynamite bomb explodes
away from the source from which it is hurled.
In other words, a large part of the
otherwise intelligent public still labor under the delusion that the
ventriloquist is endowed by nature with the power of throwing his
voice wherever and whenever he pleases and causing it mysteriously
to return to him ; and that it is as easy to ventriloquize in the
midst of a crowd or in the street as it is from a theatre stage or
in a large hall where the audience is some distance from the
performer.
If the commonly accepted theory of the vocal bomb were correct, it
would undoubtedly be as easy to ventriloquize in one place as in
another; but, as a matter of fact, there is nothing peculiar about
the formation of the throats of the professors of this art, even of
the most adept, to distinguish them from the rest of humanity, and
as for actual voice throwing-there is no such thing...

Posing
For The Camera -
Harriett Shepard and Lenore Meyer
A professional guide... for the creative model, director,
photographer
This book is not a compilation of 'Do's and Dont's.' It seeks to
organize thought on the part of photographers, directors and models
as to where posing begins and how it is accomplished. Step by step,
we will take the major and minor components of the posing figure and
show how they function in relation to the camera - their
possibilities and their limitations.
Once you know how the figure functions, and the results thereby
obtained, it is up to you to decide whether the pose is desirable or
undesirable for the job at hand. For instance, a certain hand
position may be generally recognized as awkward or conspicuous. This
position would be undesirable if you wanted your picture to express
grace and loveliness. On the other hand, it could very well serve to
characterize a gangling teenager or call attention to an object or
important copy in an advertisement.
This book is not meant to impose our personal opinions upon you. Its
intent is to increase your awareness of how symmetry of figure in
pictures follows a consistent pattern. That pattern, when analyzed,
establishes basic truths that beat like a motif throughout
prize-winning and time-tested pictures. These truths are the
fundamentals of which we speak...

15. Making
Your Own Telescope
PRIOR TO THE TIME of the telescope, man's view of the celestial
universe was woefully restricted when compared with what now can be
enjoyed on any clear evening with ordinary binoculars. There were
visible to him then only the naked-eye objects, the sun and the
moon, five of the planets, and on a clear night stars down to about
the 6th magnitude, some 2,000 in all.1 A few hazy spots could also
be seen, and there would be an occasional comet. Com-pletely unknown
were the outer planets, satellites of the planets, Saturn's rings,
and infinite numbers of stars and galaxies...
Excerpt from the Story of the
Telescope:
The Galilean Telescope. Very soon, spectacle makers and
scientists up and down Europe, learning of Lippershey's invention,
were making similar instruments. Notable among the scientists was
Galileo Galilei, the great Italian physicist and astronomer, who
fitted a plano-convex and a plano-concave spectacle lens into
opposite ends of a lead tube, making a telescope that magnified
three times (Fig. 1). "They [the objects] appeared three times
nearer and nine times larger in surface than to the naked eye,"
wrote Galileo. He experimented further and improved this erect-ing
telescope as well as was pos-sible with simple lenses, carrying the
magnification up to 30 or more. This was about the limit of its
usefulness, however, on ac-count of the great reduction in the size
of its field of view.
