1. 101 Patchwork Patterns

Quilt Name Stories, Cutting Designs, Material Suggestions, Yardage Estimates and Definite Instructions for Every Step of Quilt Making

HANDCRAFTS, like all phases of human endeavor, rather run in varying cycles. Some of us were born in the Pyrography period and reared on hand painted plates with much beshaded backgrounds; others of us date back to the stork painted on velvet with a pressed pen technique, while all of mature age have survived the era of crochet boudoir caps, of tinfoil and glass paintings, and much be-beaded lamp shades!

True, there have ever been crafts worthwhile, some arts where beauty combined with purpose to create the "joys forever." Our treasure chests contain exquisitely fashioned needlework on garments, household linens and purely decorative pieces... We have devised an hundred ways to fabricate floor coverings, draperies, and bed-ding. Which brings us to quilts and the no end of fascinating patterns and tales in their history. Through all the changing fads of woven bead-belts or melon seed portieres our quilts have been always with us. A wholesome thing it is, too, that American women have so saved and planned and pieced. To have wrought beauty even from beautiful surroundings has not always been achieved; but to salvage beauty and usefulness from coarse waste materials was the everyday accomplishment of our pioneer mothers who hooked rugs and pieced quilts.

2. 101 Hand Puppets

HERE ARE one hundred and one puppets for you. The list begins with a handkerchief puppet that you can make with a twist of the wrist, and ends with a modern version of the giant and elaborate puppets of Osaka, Japan
. Some of the ideas are brand-new; some are as old as history. If you were to construct and operate them all, you could consider yourself a master puppeteer. On the other hand, you will come to know, as every good puppeteer does, that the simplest puppet is often the best.

There are plays too, and designs for stages and props, suggestions on performance, and detailed instructions on the use of materials-all of which can be quickly located through the index at the back.

Choose a puppet, gather your materials, and begin. Watch your puppet take life under your hands. Slip him on, turn him this way and that, cause him to speak, to laugh, to think-he will delight you; he might even surprise you. The famous lady writer, George Sand, was a puppet fan. "Her feeling was that when she thrust her hand into the empty skirt of the inanimate puppet it became alive with her soul in its body, the operator and the puppet completely one."

It's true. Your puppets will lead you into a new and wondrous world from which you will not-cannot escape. It is, after all, the world of yourself.

3. Stamp Collecting as a Pastime

Many people are at a loss to understand the fascination that surrounds the pursuit of stamp collecting. They are surprised at the clannishness of stamp collectors, and their lifelong devotion to their hobby. They are thunderstruck at the enormous prices paid for rare stamps, and at the fortunes that are spent and made in stamp collecting.

The following pages will afford a peep behind the scenes, and explain how it is that, after nearly half a century of existence, stamp collecting has never been more popular than it is today. And perchance many a tired worker in search of a hobby may be persuaded that of all the relaxations that are open to him none is more attractive or more satisfying than stamp collecting.

Its literature is more abundant than that devoted to any other hobby. Its votaries are to be found in every city and town of the civilized world. From a mere schoolboy pastime it has steadily developed into an engrossing hobby for the leisured and the busy of all classes and all ranks of life, from the monarch on his throne to the errand boy in the merchant's office.

As stamp collecting may be indulged in by all ages, and at all seasons, it is becoming more and more the favourite indoor relaxation with brain-workers. It may be taken up or laid down at any time, and at any stage. Its cost may be limited to shillings or pounds, and it may be made a pleasant pursuit or an engrossing study, or it may even be diverted into money-making purposes.

So absorbing is the hobby that in stamp circles there is a saying, "Once a stamp collector, always a stamp collector."

4. The Complete Guide To Stamp Collecting

STAMP COLLECTING-Philately-is a Hobby. It is one of the great cultural pursuits of our nation and of several other nations, notably England, France, Germany, and Switzerland, of importance in the order named. It is of lesser importance but nevertheless with substantial num-bers of followers in the Benelux nations, Italy, Spain and generally throughout Europe.

In Asia, China and Japan have long been important centers of Stamp collecting. The Straits Settlements, Thailand, Indonesia, India, all have important philatelic centers and in such remote places as Afghanistan and Ethiopia one will find stamp dealers. Many nations officially take cognizance of the hobby and newly born nations have embraced the hobby as an important means of developing the "person to person" efforts to have all peoples of the world understand and live at peace with each other.

Israel, one of the newest of the world's nations, has vigorously taken up the hobby on a large scale and has even successfully completed an international philatelic exhibition of considerable consequence.

With each passing year new millions become avid stamp collectors, indeed, the hobby is a virile and dy-namic force for good that is constantly growing through-out the civilized world.

5. Practical Guide To Antique Collecting

COLLECTING anything, antique or modern, is limited by two factors: the money available and the space to be filled. Having determined these basic essentials, it is then a personal matter. The taste of the collector may lead to watches or clocks, china teapots, or innumerable other things. The lucky acquisition of an admired piece may lead to a determination to get more of the same, or at least to find out what the admiration is all about.

This book is intended as a guide for the beginner, to help him through the bewildering maze of antique objects with which he is likely to come in contact. Also, it has much information to aid the more advanced collector. It sets out to help in identifying the age of a piece; to give clues that may reveal the actual maker, or at least his nationality; to indicate comparative rarity; and to suggest what is worth having and what to leave for others.

6. Kite Making and Flying

WHEN it was first suggested that my husband should write a book about Kite Making and Flying, I must confess that I, like the rest of my family, was very surprised. I wondered what there would be to write about. After all, making and flying a kite are quite simple operations! One has only to tie together two sticks at right angles, cover them with paper or cloth, and add a tail! Of course, one must not forget a long piece of string, called the kite line. Having done these things, one has only to throw the kite up into the air on a suitably windy day and away it flies! Or-does it?

My husband hastily assured me that there was much more to the business than this, and, as he began to explain to me some of the technicalities of the subject, I realized that he knew far more about it than I had suspected.

Since that time, there have been visits to libraries and business premises; letters to individuals and firms; the house has been filled with specimens of cane, string, cloth and paper; models of kites have been looking down at us from their places on the walls; discussions about weather conditions and the science of flight have taken place, and a whole new world seems to have opened before my eyes.

Here, then, is a hobby which provides pleasure, entertainment, and education all the year round. The long winter evenings present an opportunity for artistic minds and busy hands to make the kites which can be flown during the bright summer evenings and at many other times during the year. These are the main things, but, as we shall discover, they are accompanied by many other enjoyable activities. In particular, as one looks round in an attempt to forecast flying conditions, one is reminded of the wonder and the beauty of the world in which we live.

7. WOOD-WORKING For Amateur Craftsmen

THE first thing a beginner must learn to do when he takes a drawing from which he is to make a piece of woodwork, is to prepare a stock bill of materials that can, be given to the lumberman to fill. Whether the worker gets what he wants or not will depend greatly upon the specifications he gives the dealer, whether they are intelligible or not, and whether they allow one and only one interpretation.

Three practices are common in preparing lumber for use: To sell it to the workman in the rough, just as it comes from the sawmill; to machine-plane the pieces to thicknesses and widths such as the finished pieces demand, so that only the lengths require the attention of the worker-aside from the making of the joints; and to mill-plane the stock on two surfaces to stock thicknesses, but allowing the lengths and widths to remain as in rough stock.

The first is cheapest in first cost; the second is the most expensive because of the frequent changes in setting the planing machine to the different sizes. The third is most common, except where there are to be a great number of pieces of a given size, because it utilizes hand work and machine work to the best advantage...

8. The Manual of Ship Model Making

To aid the beginner as well as the seasoned old-timer, POPULAR SCIENCE MONTHLY has prepared this valuable manual of kinks, short cuts, and time-tried methods. For the first time in the history of model making, the best hints developed by experts are now available to the amateur. Instead of following blindly from stage to stage in the construction of a model, the beginner now can use the methods of the professional.

In the pages that follow you will find simple step-by-step instructions that will help you to select and make your tools, shape your hulls, build your deck fittings, and apply your rigging and sails. Finishing and decorating, one of the fine points of model making, is simple if you know how.

To fix this knowledge in your mind, you must put it to actual use. For this reason, complete descriptions and plans for building two decorative models have been included. One model, a beautiful galleon reminiscent of ro-mantic Spanish treasure ships, forms a particularly graceful decoration. By building it, you can learn a great deal about model making. The second model, a clipper ship, has all the grace and beauty of the ships that made America's nine-teenth century commercial fleet famous. In the description of its rigging, the amateur will find the answers to many questions.

Finally, to make the book complete, a carefully compiled glossary of nautical terms has been included. This alone will serve to identify many of the parts used on modern as well as ancient ships.

All in all, this manual has been prepared with the hope that it will offer to the model maker the same fund of information that a scientific handbook offers the engineer. Briefly, it is a ready reference that will make your hobby of model making more enjoyable and your finished models more authentic and realistic.

9. How To Make Baskets

THE twisting and weaving of Nature's materials, grasses, twigs, rushes and vines, into useful and beautiful forms seems almost instinctive in man. Perhaps it came to him as the nest-weaving instinct comes to birds-for at first he used it as they do, in the building of his house. Later, shields and boats were formed of wicker work, but how long ago the first basket was made no one is wise enough to tell us.

Today Indian tribes in South America weave baskets from their native palms, South African negroes use reeds and roots, while the Chinese and Japanese are wonderful workmen in this as in other arts and industries; but basketry has come down to us more directly through the American Indian. Generations of these weavers have produced masterpieces, many of which are preserved in our museums, and the young basket maker need not go on long pilgrimages to study the old masters of his craft. Here at last, as in England, the value of manual training is being realized, and basketry is taking an important place; following the kindergarten and enabling the child to apply the principles he has learned there. He still works from the centre out, and weaves as he wove his paper mats, but permanent materials have replaced the perishable ones, and what he makes has an actual value.

14. Modern Lettering and Calligraphy

The tools of the lettering craftsman, be he calligrapher, painter or stone-mason, have not changed with the years, but the form of the letters and the execution-particularly in architecture-have moved with the times, and we find neon strip, plastic and other materials providing; new methods of attracting public attention and new problems for the lettering craftsman to solve. Whether the public fully appreciate the immense use which is made of the drawn letter is a debatable point, for whether ultimately printed, painted or rendered into metal or stone, the original is the work of an artist, call himself what he will.

As in Lettering of Today this volume has been divided into four sections, each selected by a practising craftsman in his own particular sphere. [Calligraphy, Book Production, Lettering in Association with Architecture and Lettering in Advertising] Within the limitations of these four sections will be found a wide selection of representative examples of lettering of today. Beyond these limits there are of course many other uses of lettering, particularly those in which the miniature or illustration plays a major decorative role. To cover them all with any degree of thoroughness is beyond the scope of one volume and we hope that our readers will agree that in choosing a smaller field we have been able to produce a more valuable work.

16. How To Study Birds

Not only does interest in birds cover all classes of society and shades of opinion, but different people watch birds in different ways, and to different degrees of intensity. Thus bird-watchers may range from the person who can name but half a dozen of the common species of birds, and yet can appreciate their high aesthetic appeal, to the trained biologist, whose critical interest is that of the research worker seeking to gain, from the way birds live, some idea of their place in the natural order. Between these two extremes there has been fixed in the past a wide gulf, and a measure of contempt often exists in the scientist for the so-called "bird-lover" who has the anthropomorphic outlook, whilst the bird-lover in his turn regards the scientist as a dust-dry man whose very training and attitude prevent him from appreciating any of the aesthetic appeal that birds may have.

Actually, there can be few field-ornithologists, however rigid their scientific attitude, who have not at sometime or other fallen completely under the spell of birds as gloriously free creatures, beautiful of form and often of voice, and this spell can be intensified rather than weakened by a correct and scientific attitude to bird behaviour. By studying the habits of birds and interpreting their actions dispassionately on broad scientific principles, we can arrive at a better understanding of their minds and emotions, and their place in the green world in which they live. Then, truly to know them is to love them.
